Michigan Tech's Swing Club is located on the campus of
Michigan
Technological University, in Houghton, Michigan (about two hours west
of Marquette). While most of the students undertake engineering in one
form or another, there are many other branches of science, technolgy,
and increasingly, liberal arts that are studied here.
Our swing dance club was founded in January 2000 by an informal group
of college students who had been dancing swing at Uphill 41 for years
and wanted a formal organization to teach and practice. This group has
been dedicated to bringing a lively and friendly atmosphere in which to
learn how to dance.
During the school year, we now dance at the Student Development Complex
(SDC) on Tech's campus in the dance room (second floor, next to the
weight room). We have Saturday (6:00-9:00 PM) evenings reserved. We
will soon have times during the week, in the MUB.
We primarily dance East Coast Swing and some Lindy Hop, but it is not
uncommon to see various types of ballroom, latin, and different types
of swing. We are always open to new ideas (and especially new dances to
add to our repotoire).
Anyone is welcome to our meetings; there is no cover charge, no formal
dress code, and no age limit. We have many community members from the
local high school and couples who are relearning the steps they took in
their youth. We also have many college students who bring their own
unique style to the club. To become a voting member of the club, there
are $5 dues per semester that can be paid to any officer.
We put on semi-formal dances throughout the year (homecoming, etc), and
will also do lessons for Greek rushes. If you'd like to contact us
about such an event please email us.
